The noise decoder
High-pitched squeal or squeak → drum rollers or idler pulley
The drum rides on small rubber-and-metal rollers, and the belt is tensioned by an idler pulley. Both wear flat or dry out with age. The squeal usually starts intermittently, gets worse with heat, and eventually becomes constant. Rollers and pulleys are cheap parts — the cost is mostly labour to open the cabinet, which is why we replace the belt at the same time. Fixing a squeal early is the difference between a minor repair and a no-spin breakdown on a snowy Sunday.
Rhythmic thumping → flat-spotted rollers or a hard object
A thump-thump-thump in time with the drum usually means a roller has worn a flat spot — or a shoe is in the drum. Check the drum first; we won’t judge.
Metallic scraping or grinding → drum glides or a foreign object
The front of the drum rests on plastic glides. Worn through, metal rides on metal — a scraping that worsens under load. Also common: a bra wire or coin slipped past the lint filter into the blower housing, which produces a surprisingly loud metallic rattle.
Loud roar or rumble → blower wheel or motor bearings
A roar that rises with speed points at the blower wheel (often lint-packed) or the motor’s own bearings. Motor bearings on an older dryer trigger our honest repair-vs-replace conversation before you commit.

Worn rollers and pulleys age faster in a dryer that runs hot — and dryers run hot when their vents are choked with lint.
