Fridge Not Cooling but Freezer Works? Here's What's Actually Wrong
This exact symptom has four common causes, and two of them you can check yourself in ten minutes. A technician’s honest walkthrough.

When your fridge is warm but the freezer still works, the problem is almost always in how cold air moves from the freezer to the fridge section — not the cooling system itself. In most refrigerators, one evaporator in the freezer makes all the cold air, and a fan pushes a share of it through a damper into the fresh-food compartment. If the fan dies, the airflow path ices over, or the damper sticks shut, the freezer stays frozen while the fridge slowly climbs toward room temperature. Here are the four causes we find on real service calls in Oshawa, in order of how often we see them.
1. A defrost fault has iced over the evaporator coils
This is the most common cause. Every frost-free fridge runs a defrost cycle several times a day to melt frost off the evaporator coils. When the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control fails, frost builds into a solid block of ice that chokes off airflow. The freezer — sitting right next to the coils — stays cold, but almost nothing reaches the fridge.
The tell: the fridge got warm gradually over days, and if you open the freezer panel you’d find a wall of ice. Some people notice the fridge works again for a day or two after being unplugged (the ice melts) — that’s practically a confirmed diagnosis.

2. The evaporator fan has failed
The evaporator fan is what physically moves cold air out of the freezer compartment. When it fails, cooling stops moving — same symptom, different part.
The tell: listen with the freezer door open and the door switch pressed. A healthy fan hums steadily; a dying one squeals, clicks, or is silent. If your fridge is noticeably quieter than it used to be, suspect the fan.
The fix: fan motor replacement — one of the more affordable refrigerator repairs, usually done in a single visit.
3. The air damper is stuck closed
Between the freezer and fridge sections sits a motorized damper that regulates how much cold air the fresh-food side gets. Stuck closed — jammed by ice or a failed motor — and the fridge is simply cut off from its air supply.
The tell: freezer perfect, fridge warm, fan audibly running, no big ice buildup. On many Samsung and LG models the control board will also log an error code a technician can read.
4. Dirty condenser coils (the one you can fix yourself)
Condenser coils under or behind the fridge dump heat out of the system. Coated in pet hair and dust, the whole system loses capacity — and the fresh-food section, last in line for cold air, suffers first.
What you can check before calling anyone
- Temperature settings — make sure nobody bumped the fridge dial to its warmest setting.
- Blocked vents — a fridge packed solid can block the air inlet; clear space around the vents on the back wall.
- Door seal — close the door on a piece of paper; if it slides out easily, the gasket is leaking warm air in.
- Condenser coils — the vacuum trick above.
If none of that changes anything within 12–24 hours, the fault is internal — fan, defrost system or damper — and it needs a technician with parts.
How long is my food safe?
